Getting Rid of Musty Odor from Your Carpet

Oftentimes, life is messy. As a homeowner, you probably do not have the time to handle all specks of dirt in your home. This is particularly true if you’ve got pets or kids.

However, what should you do if those minor specks become major? Because of this, professionals always recommend that you deal with your carpet issues immediately before they become worse, especially when it comes to its odor.

So, how do you get rid of the musty odor from your carpet? Aside from hiring a Raleigh carpet cleaning company for help, here are some other tips to consider:

Using Cleaning Products

If you do not want to attempt a DIY approach in cleaning your carpet, there are a couple of cleaning products available at your local home improvement shop. This includes foam carpet shampoos.

  • Spray the carpet cleaner lightly onto the surface. Do not spray it too much to avoid adding too much moisture to the carpet.
  • Scrub and blot the surface using a scrubber tool or sponge.
  • Let the area dry for a couple of minutes. You can accelerate this process by using fans.
  • Lastly, vacuum up any debris.

Using Chemicals

One excellent method you can try to get rid of the musty odor from your carpet is to use hydrogen peroxide. If you want to do this approach, you will require water, hydrogen peroxide, and a spray bottle. The amount you’ll need will greatly vary on the size of your carpet.

Before you start, it’s crucial that you confirm that the carpet can handle hydrogen peroxide. You can contact the manufacturer of the carpet or check its label.

  • Combine 5 parts water and 1 part hydrogen peroxide in the spray bottle.
  • Spray the solution on the top and back if the carpet is not tacked down. If that is not the case, mist the surface lightly and leave it for a couple of hours. This will help get rid of the odor and prevent any development of mold.

Using Natural Ingredients

If you want to go all-natural, you’ll require a box of baking soda, 1 cup of white vinegar, and 2 cups of warm water.

  • As much as possible, dry out your carpet. Usually, moldy and musty odors are a result of excess moisture.
  • Once the carpet is dry, vacuum it to get rid of loose debris or fibers.
  • Combine 1 cup of white vinegar and 2 cups of warm water in a spray bottle. Next, lightly spray the surface. Make sure you aren’t applying too much of it.
  • After that, sprinkle a good amount of baking soda over the surface. Leave it for a couple of hours. However, it is ideal to leave it overnight to achieve the best results.
  • After 1 day, you need to get rid of the baking soda on the surface by vacuuming the carpet.

If you tried all of these methods and nothing worked for you, the best thing you can do is to hire a carpet cleaning company to help get rid of odor from your carpet.
